I did it again!

As you know, I’ve been a little preoccupied and haven’t scheduled any events, but my plan was/is to continue to share monthly “set samplers”. Well, I completely forgot AGAIN about the projects for the month of February, which should have been posted at the end of January. Thanks to a faithful reader, who kindly reminded me, you will receive two sets of projects in a matter of days!

At convention last year, I shared my calendar of themes for the year, focusing on sets from the annual catalog. The theme for February was condolence and thinking of you. You’ll notice I threw in a baby tag/gift, and I also used the set for the bookmark I posted last week. I chose to feature An Open Heart, a simple yet elegant set…one of my favorites. I can also see this set being used for Mother’s Day and birthdays. It’s just a beautiful set!

We hope you’ve been having fun with your February Paper Pumpkin Kit, Layers of Gratitude.

Here are some fun alternate uses for the kit. Try cutting up the accordion card to make lots of little note cards, as I did here. You could also use the felt “thanks” negatives and adhere them to our Tag A Bag Gift Boxes (item # 130927). Or just have tons of fun with the incredible stamp set!Layers_of_Graditude_Blog_PP-2

We can’t wait to see all of the fun things you’ll come up with. Provide a link in the comments below if you’d like to share what you’ve made!

I was inspired to make this little treat box that was posted on Stampin’Connection by Demo Andrea Brewster.  I changed it up with the sentiment but used her same colors.  Thanks Andrea for your creative use of this die cut.

Think Spring!

I know what you’re saying! “Spring???” But it’s never too early to start thinking about springtime to help get you through the winter blues. All you have to do is open the Stampin’ Up! occasions catalog and you can find all kinds of products to get you excited for spring!

photo 1I created two spring garden-themed projects using the Berry Basket Bigz L Die (item # 137366), From the Garden Stamp Set (item # 137139), and Handpicked Framelits Dies(137361).

My first project showcases the adorable berry basket. It’s really easy to make! I used Kraft card stock (item # 133674) because its heavier weight was perfect for holding my potted violets. Be sure to watch the instructional video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vTokoc1oH3U to learn how to put the basket together.

I used Fast Fuse (item # 129026) to adhere the Hello Honey 3/8” Satin Stitched Ribbon (item # 133671) to the top edge of the basket. Then I finished it off with Tea Lace Paper Doilies (item # 129399) and striped banners made using Painted Blooms Designer Series Paper (item # 137784) and Rich Razzleberry card stock (item # 115316). I stamped the adorable little garden marker image using Rich Razzleberry (item # 126950) and Wild Wasabi (item # 126959) ink. Then I cut it out using the Big Shot (item # 113439) and the Handpicked Framelits Dies.

photo 2

photo 3I also used the Berry Basket Bigz L Die to create a card/tiny gift that would be perfect for a vegetable or flower gardener. For the background, I used the Wild Wasabi striped pattern in the Painted Blooms Designer Series Paper.

First, I cut one side of the basket from Kraft card stock and added an additional score line 1/4″ below the original score line. Then I cut a piece of Whisper White card stock for the basket’s scalloped edge trim. I added a couple of additional score lines using my Paper Trimmer (as shown). Be sure to have 11 scallops in between with two scallops on each side. Next, I stapled them together, using Fast Fuse to adhere the tab to the card.

photo 4This side view shows you how to a form a card pocket. It’s large enough to hold up to two seed packets. I wrapped each seed packet with a Tea Lace Paper Doily and Crushed Curry Baker’s Twine (item # 134586).

I made the little garden markers from the same stamp set and Framelits Dies using Hello Honey (item # 133643), Rich Razzleberry, and Wild Wasabi ink.

photo 5

photo 6I hope that these projects inspire you to snap out of the winter blues and embrace spring. It’s just around the corner!

20. February 2015 · Comments Off on A Confession · Categories: Cards

I have a confession. I cannot draw . . . at all.

Back in my college years I took a course called “The Art of the Storybook,” and though it had absolutely nothing to do with my major, it has since proved to be the course that was most pertinent to the direction my life has taken.

We explored the art and creativity of storytelling and illustrating. I even wrote an origin myth and illustrated the book using several different art forms and mediums. Though my book is very amateurish and, well . . . quite an embarrassing look into my artistic ability . . . I love and cherish it. My book is a reminder that I don’t have to be an amazing artist, that I shouldn’t compare my work to that of others, and that I can be creative and explore my own artistic abilities. The course helped me to stretch. It forced me out of my comfort zone, and got me to try new things and enjoy them . . . even if my creations were not worthy of an art gallery.

Lately I have been in a rut. I don’t seem to be enjoying myself creatively as much. That was, until a friend of mine got me interested in creating again by encouraging me to try something new . . . zentangle. It was amazing! Zentangle is easy, relaxing, and it is something Gage can do with me, too! Thus my creative journey was rekindled, and I set out to carve a zentangle stamp!

I already admitted that I can’t draw; did I mention that I can’t carve a stamp, either?! Man, have I gotten rusty! But I pulled out my Undefined Stamp Carving Kit (item # 133402) anyway!

A-Confession-1

My original design was detailed and intricate. It was zentangle. But, after going a little carve-crazy, I accidentally carved out the wrong thing and ended up just hollowing out the innards and getting rid of all the details.

At first I was upset, and even contemplated getting out some more rubber. Since you can now buy Undefined Carving Rubber (item # 137123) in packs of three for super-cheap, I always have extra on hand for mistakes. But instead, remembering my origin myth book, I decided to embrace my mistake and let my creative journey be. After getting my stamp on paper, I realized something: with it being so plain, I left a plethora of opportunities for this stamp to be transformed in many different ways!

The Project Life Journaling Pens (item # 135304) were perfect for trying out some zentangle.

A-Confession-2

And of course, I just HAD to make a card . . . because that’s what I do.

A-Confession-3

And then another . . . and another.

A-Confession-4

A-Confession-5

The “nerdy-bird” card is actually a bookmark.

A-Confession-6

How the “nerdy-bird” came about is another long story. I will spare you the details!

Yup, I was happy I embraced my plain little stamp, leaving him open for many possibilities he may not have otherwise seen!

A-Confession-7

Where will your next creative mistake journey take you?

Lovely Amazing You Samples

I’m a note-writer, a gift-giver, and an all-around big softy. I love to leave little notes, treats, and gifts for those I care about. I enjoy doing things to show I care. (I honestly need to make time to do this more often.) It’s the relationships we share that make life interesting and rewarding. This is what inspired our new stamp set, Lovely, Amazing You (item #140594) $14.95 US/$17.95 CA.

What are the reasons you give cards, treats, gifts? For me, it’s to thank someone, to wish them well on a special occasion, or often just to say, “Hey, I’m thinking of you.”

Here are some ways to show your love, admiration, and appreciation. Let people know that you care, that you think they’re amazing, and that you might even love them more than chocolate.

16. February 2015 · Comments Off on Pretty Paper Beads · Categories: 3D Items

Did you ever roll paper beads with toothpicks when you were a kid? I just rediscovered this fun, little craft—and making them is kind of addictive.

Just wrap a long, triangular piece of paper around a wooden skewer until you have a bead. Adhere the tail-end of the paper to the bead using a little Multipurpose Liquid Glue, then cover the bead using a thin coat of Mod Podge. Let your bead dry.

After making a few dozen of these little cuties I started to think of Easter eggs . . . and one of our new occasions catalog stamp sets—For Peep’s Sake, item # 138557—came to mind.
1
I used the Ornate Tag Topper Punch (item # 137416) on the top and bottom of this Easter favor to create fancy edges.

2

3To make the beads, I used Painted Blooms Designer Series Paper (item # 137784),Best Year Ever Designer Series Paper (item # 138633), and the Rich Razzleberry designs from the Brights Backgrounds Designer Series Paper Stacks(item # 130134).

Beginning at the top of a sheet of 12″ x 12″ Designer Series Paper, score every inch on one side; on the opposite side, begin 1/2″ from the top and score every inch. Draw diagonal lines between the staggered score lines to create triangles.

4

5
The beads don’t have to be rolled up perfectly; their irregular look is part of their charm!

6
When my friend, Bonnie, saw my paper beads drying, she said that they reminded her of an insect collection. My immediate thought was: butterflies!

7

8There are many ways to make paper beads from Designer Series Paper. Just do an Internet search for “paper bead templates” and you’ll find plenty! P.S. If you use elastic cord to thread your beads, put a dot of Crystal Effects (item # 101055) on the knot and allow it to dry. That will help it stay secure.

Have fun!

Now this really surprised me.  My husband selected this card (from Guy Greetings page 41 of the OC), as one of his favorites.  I generally let him see the cards that I create if I do a whole bunch together.  I ask him which ones he likes the best and, out of 11 cards, he picked this as number 3.  Now, you might think that would be normal because it is a very masculine card.  However, Jack usually like cards with lots of bright colors.  He is himself an artist so he is very good with colors and usually stays away from monochromatics like this vintage card.  Actually the only color on this card is from the gold sequins I attached to the card at the last minute because I thought it needed it.  What do you think?  In addition I used Crystal Effects on the 3D hats, although it is hard to tell from this photo.

January Paper Pumpkin-1

The January Paper Pumpkin has my heart. I couldn’t love this kit more. Playing around with this kit and coming up with a few different ways to use it was so much fun.

January Paper Pumpkin-2

First, I made a super simple valentine. This is for those of you, myself included, who are super busy and usually put off the treats until the last minute. This little treat is beyond easy to throw together, but it doesn’t look that way at all. The packaging and size of the chocolate work perfectly with the colors in this kit. Just a little stamping and some glue and you will have 24 of these put together in no time.

January Paper Pumpkin-3

Of course I had to make a card with this kit too. I pulled in the Perpetual Birthday Calendar stamp set and some Blushing Bride ink. It is such a simple and fun card.

January Paper Pumpkin-4

For this cute gift I made a background with the love heart stamp from the kit using Versamark ink. I then embossed the hearts with Gold Stampin’ Emboss Powder. I placed it on top of a piece of black and white paper from the Stacked with Love Designer Series Paper Stack. (I love that paper so much!) I wrapped a little twine around the package and clipped on the heart with the cute gold clips from the kit. Those gold clips are so darn amazing. The Happy Day stamp is from the Cheerful Critters stamp set from occasions catalog.

I hope you have as much fun playing with the Filled With Love Paper Pumpkin Kit as I did.

I know you probably thought I used Blendabilities to color this image but I did not.  I used an aqua painter and our dye based inks, Island Indigo, Early Espresso, Wild Wasabi and soft suede with Whisper White card stock.  In addition, I used a brayer and rolled the background paper, Irresistibly Yours, page 15 of the SABC, with Island Indigo.  It is a white background paper with embossed diagonal white lines.  When you brayer over it, the ink stays on the white paper but the embossed lines can be wiped off with a soft cloth because the ink will resists the areas embossed.  I used soft Sky ink to lay a color around my image and after painting the image I used a white gel pen to highlight.

The images from this card are from the set called Butterfly Basics, page 26 of the OC.  I told you that you were going to see a lot of samples made with this set.  That is because it is so versatile.  I distressed this card with soft suede ink and used a distressing tool to rough up the edges.   I used one of our clothes pins, found on page 209 of the AC and Linen Thread found on page 206 of the same catalog.

I created this Easter card with the set called Happy Easter Bunny, page 35 of the OC and he is a happy little guy and so stinkin’ cute!  I used Blendabilites and DSP called Best Year Ever, page 4 of the SABC.  You can get this DSP FREE with a $50 purchase before tax and shipping.  I used the ribbon, same page that mathes this DSP.  It also has matching buttons.  Both the Ribbons and Buttons you can get FREE with a $50 purchase.  Such a Deal!
Did you know that you can choose as your FREE item from the SABC a package of Blendabilites?  You can read all about it and the colors available on page 20 of the SABC.  Contact me here if you do not have an SAB Catalog.

This washi tape is meant to go with the DSP Sweet Dreams, page 39.  I used one of the buttons from the Sweet Dreams buttons, same page.  I thought it went well on this little card that I created with the hostess set, Time to Celebrate, using the DSP from SABC , page 4, called Best Year Ever.  I know if you have these catalogs you have to agree with me that they are the best ever.  If you don’t have one and need one, please contact me HERE.

See what I mean about this stamp set?  Just by changing the color of your inks you can go crazy and make your little friends any color you want.  It is so much fun to color and wonderful therapy.  Nothing like stamping lined images so you can color them in, just like when you were a kid with a new coloring book and a fresh box of crayons.  I had some left over wiggly eyes from a couple of years ago when we had them for Halloween.  I kept them knowing I would probably use them one of these days.  Unlike most of the stuff that retires, I get rid of so I can replenish my old stuff with new.  Well, these eyes are one of the things I just couldn’t let go. LOL

I love the sentiments in the stamp set, Adventure Awaits, page 41 so I am always looking what to put with them.  I selected the stamp set Petal Potpourri, page 23 with a matching punch, also on same page.  I punched out flowers to resemble a lace border on the bottom of the card and also the main focal point above the seam binding, Wisteria Wonder.  A very simple and quick card.  If you bundle the flower set with the punch you get a 15% discount off the price, see bottom of page 23.
Speaking of adventures, we are boarding the Disney Fantasy today for our 7 day family trip to the Eastern Caribbean.   I plan on doing some Trek Helmet diving, snorkeling, and spending one of our days at sea in the spa, on board, for the ultimate works.  Can’t wait! We finish the trip with a day at Disney’s own private Island, Castaway Cay.

Since I will not be able to access my lap top while I am gone, I am trying to post in advance so you don’t have to go without seeing some samples on my blog.

This is one of my favorite stamp sets in the OC.  You can find it on page 26 and it is also a bundled set that if you buy both the set and Thinlits you get a 15% discount.  Details are listed on page.    I think my favorite image in this set is the honeycomb.  It is right up my alley.  I love textured images.  It also has great sentiments, like this one about the caterpillar.
The colors I used on this were Mossy Meadow and Calypso Coral.  I embossed the background paper with the EF Spring Flowers Textured Impressions, page 19 of the OC.

This stamp comes from a hostess set that you can earn if you host a workshop in your home or if you have a book party of $150, either on-line or in a club.  It is so stinkin’ cute.  I used Back to Black for the back ground and our new White Jute ribbon found on page 43 of the OC.  So pretty.  I used 2 different punches to cut out the little flower, Petite Petals and Itty Bitty punches, all found in the AC pages 219 through 222.  Topped it off with a black Dot candy.  I embossed the little worm with white craft ink and white Embossing powder and colored in with Blendabilities after coloring the image with the white chalk pen.

I made this card, again, for another friend that I do water aerobics with.  I made it extra large so we could all sign it.  I love to color this image with blendabilites in all different colors.  Using different colors, on the animals, every time I use this stamp, takes the boring out of  multiple stamping.  I like to make up these get well cards in advance so that I can just pull one out when the need arises.  At my age, every one around me, including myself, are  not always 100% healthy all the time.  However, at the risk of repeating myself, being sick beats the alternative.    LOL

I was inspired to make this card from a video posted on Stampin’Connection (SU Demo Site), by Linda Bauwin.  I used the stamp set, Butterfly Basics with the Butterflies matching thinlit dies found on page 26 of the OC.   You get a 15% discount on both the stamp set and thinlits bundle.  A great buy and a set that can be used for just about any type of card.  You will be seeing a lot of these samples on my blog.  It is one of my favs.  Thank you Linda for your inspiration.  We made this card at Saturday’s camp also and everyone loved it.

Love this stamp set, Moon Lake found on page 21 of the OC.  I used watercolor paper and classic ink with an aqua painter.  I used a white gel pen to highlight the water.  This stamp set is perfect for water coloring.  I did some experimenting with blendabilities on this set but was not happy with the results.   I used Island Indigo (one of my favorite ink colors), for the water, Soft suede, Crumb cake and Wild wasabi on this card.

Today is my oldest daughter’s birthday and my youngest daughter’s Wedding anniversary. Here we are on our Disney cruise last February.  We had so much fun we are going again this February.  One of the nights the theme is Pirate Night and we had to dress up like pirates.  It was so awesome!  Love my fam!DSCN3368

By the way, I used the journal Retro Fresh, found on page 190 of the AC to record all our memories & pictures from this trip.  This year I will be using Project Life by Stampin’Up!© to record all of this years Disney Cruise.  Sooooo easy!

We made this little bag with the new Thinlits Mini Treat Bag found on page 9 of the OC.  I used the DSP Typeset from the AC and the in-color wide bakers twine also from that catalog.  The stamp is colored with Stampin’write markers, topped off with one of our lovely embellishments, Something borrowed.  The hearts down the side of the bag are cut out with the same thinlits dies above, a combination of very versatile thinlits come in this package, not just the mini bag.  Unbelievable buy for the money.

This is truly my favorite stamp set (Lotus Blossom) from SABC this year.  It is all over pinterest and the internet.  Such a beautiful design.  I used the stamp set Hello Life, page 6 of the OC  for the sentiment.  The color I selected for this flower is Pacific Point, wild wasabi and Mossy Meadow.  This was one of the cards we made at stamp camp Saturday.  Everyone loved it.
